The swift collapse of the Third Reich in the spring of 1945 brought, with the surrender, mountains of films and documents covering the entire period of the Nazi regime. Perhaps no other period in history is as well documented. Many of these films are now historical documents of a time when madness and hate overran mankind. Some films made in those years do not reflect current official views of Germany, its people, or other nations and should be used only with extreme parental discretion and guidance. Almost 55 years have passed since the terrible holocaust. The memories and the consequences are still with us today. HOW...WHY... could such a system have arisen and flourished? How many times have the questions been asked? How many answers have been offered? The voices on these video tapes are the voices of history... perhaps those who listen today can help answer the questions posed by these terrible years!

The Great War - World War I

World War I - Prelude To Battle #1
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 45 min.- We revisit what the world was like at the turn of the century. The Nickelodeon is all the rage and America is at peace. The San Francisco fire is the big story of the day and the country watches it in horror on the big screen. In politics, the larger than life Teddy Roosevelt is back from Africa and on the national scene. In the far distance, the drums of war are sounding. On June 28, 1914, the heir to the throne of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand is slain. Europe is thrown into turmoil. War is inevitable.

World War I - From Mons To The Somme #2
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 50 min.-The proud and powerful Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany is confident that his new Germany can over take his old enemies, France and Russia. His generals tell him they cannot fail as they set off to battle. But the Belgians dare to put up a fight, and Great Britain races to meet the Germans outside the small town of Mons. This is not going to be a quick and decisive victory. From Mons to Marne, to the opening Battles of the Eastern Front, a slow terrible war was unfolding. Back and forth the warring parties fight, across the map of Europe. Finally, the French implore the English to launch a major attack and along the River Somme, one of the greatest battles in history unfolds.

World War I - Military Command #3
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 51 min.- War is always divided between those who make war and those who fight it. In this program, we examine the military and political leaders of the major powers. From the Kaiser to Franz Joseph, from Petain to Joffre, we see who emerges as true leaders. From the heart of America came one of the great modern day generals, John "Blackjack" Pershing. His life and times are reviewed to show what a great and natural leader he was for the "Yanks".

World War I - America Awakes #4
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 44min.- President Woodrow Wilson tried long and hard to keep America out of War. As Europe slipped into chaos, the U.S. tried to keep the lines of trade and communicaton open. But it could not, and did not, last. When the German U-boats sank the Lusitania, America could not longer remain on the sidelines. Raising and equipping and army was a massive undertaking. But, by the spring of 1918, American troops were ready, willing and able. Millions made their way to France where their commanding General, "Blackjack" Perishing, showed them the way. We march through the opening months with the young Americans and see them mature as a fighting force. From St. Mihiel to the Muese Argonne, the Yanks prove they can fight!

World War I - By Air And By Sea #5
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 51min.- The history of World War I is mostly a tale of land battles. But there were many battles that took place on board navy vessels. And, for the first time in history, real battles took place above the battlefield, in new and amazing flying machines. The story of the role the Navy and Air Force played is examined in this program along with some of the heroes such as the Red Baron and America's ace, Eddie Rickenbacker. This was an era of great technological advances, and these advances might have been too much for the military leaders to comprehend. We examine those technological advances and the roles they played in the war.

World War I - The Tide Turns #6
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 42 min.- Admidst the collapse of Russia into revolution, and the emergence of America on the world stage, there is a sense of desperation in the air. The war has gone on far too long, and the European powers are wasted and spent. Enter the United States, young vital and raring for action. The Austrians are licked, and the Italians have switched sides. The Germans try one last great push, it is now or never for the Kaiser. Even though the English and the French are decimated, they gain strength from their new ally. The German push is stopped and the Hindenburg line is smashed. America's new divisions tear up the terrain and turn the tide of the war. The war comes to a merciful end and President Wilson sails for Versailles in hopes of a lasting and just peace. Instead, he finds the vanquished nations falling apart and the victors greedy for the spoils of war.

World War I - Aftermath #7
English Lang.,b/w, ca. 46 min.-Much happens between Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 and the final peace. There is much to be decided. Back in the United States, people are beginning to celebrate the coming victory. Everyone is certain that there will be no more wars, so America demobilizes its military. As we survey the peace, we see what a terrible price was paid. On average, over 5,000 men died each day of the war. Many more, non-combatants, died from illness and disease. And the conditions set forth by the Treaty of Versailles were so punitive that they only served to inflame the embers of hatred. But for the men who fought bravely in this world war, we must raise our hands in praise. They met on the battlefield, each fighting for god and country, each believing that his cause was the right cause.
